What’s In a Name? |
Friday, December 28, 2007 |
I had a Guildie recently tell me that the name “Pallanen” made him think my Warrior was a Paladin. That made me laugh but I can see how. It made me think about how much fun just picking a name for a new character can be. Or not. lol This is how I came up with names for my characters (in the order I made them).
I tried to be creative with my girls. Pallanen is my first and she is a Warrior so I wanted something tough sounding. Her name is actually “Reaper” in elvish. Sairalinde was so pretty to me that I just called her “Beautiful”. That’s her name in elvish.
Then came Jaelle. I wanted a Rogue but the naming was hard. To me a Rogue is a loner. A different type of personality. Plus I knew she would be an assassin and scoundrel to boot. I wanted something totally different so I researched Gypsy names. I did a search for female Romani names and came upon the name Jaelle. The list described the name as “possibly a variant of the name Jael, the name of a Kenite woman who killed Sisera, a Canaanite General and enemy of the Israelites, meaning ‘wild she goat’”. That worked for me. lol (Besides, I think it’s a pretty name.)
Next was Merenwen. My impression of a Mage was that they were basically witches or something like them. I wanted Sabrina (for obvious reasons) but it was taken. So I gave her an elvish version of that name. Merenwen is elvish for Sabrina. (A human with an elvish name…. so shoot me.)
Next in line was actually Aerynel. There is no real magic to how I picked her name. It was just derived from the name Aeryn (which I love) but that was taken. (There must be a few Claudia Black fans playing WoW. Remember Aeryn Sun?) Anyway, I knew that adding “el” to the end of an elvish name meant “little” or “small” and the Blood Elves are tiny little things, so I tried that. It worked out.
Then came Earane. She was to be a Warlock and I felt that Warlocks tread a fine line between bad and good magic. I wanted her name to be “Belle Morte”. That is French for “Beautiful Death” But someone else had that name. (I got it from reading Laurell K. Hamilton books. Maybe they did too?) So once again I tried it in Elvish and it worked. Earane is Elvish for “Beautiful Death”. Another Human with an Elvish name.
Next was Earanel. I guess if you have bothered to read this you already figured out that I took Earane and added the “el” to the end. Yep, “Beautiful Little Death”. LOL
Next I decided I wanted some Horde friends for Aerynel. It works well having several alts that do different professions to help each other out. So I made a Rogue (I love Rogues) and called her Rubacuori. I got the name simply because she turned out to be so pretty and she was a Rogue, who is a personality all their own. Nothing can keep them tied down. Rubacuori is simply “Heartbreaker” in Italian. She is a heartbreaker. The guys better steer clear of her. LOL
Then I decided I wanted an Enchanter on the Horde side and made Eville, the Priest. I never tried a Priest and to me, Horde are all bad guys. Evil. So having a Priest who’s name just tells you they are evil made perfect sense to me. It also reminded me of Cruella De Ville for some reason. :P
Last in line was Granuaile. I have already detailed where her name came from in the Dec. 18th post. A fine Irish name of an impressive woman way ahead of her time.
I sometimes see characters in the game and wonder how and why they have the names they do. Some are easy to figure out. Some I have no idea. At times I just want to ask but that would interfere with my playing time, so I leave it alone. Can’t take too much time chatting. There are Quests to complete! Sheesh!Labels: names |

Jen you seem really into the lore of Warcraft so I am wondering if you read the quests texts for most of your quests? I think most people generally agree that at this point the majority of the horde Orcs/Trolls/Tauren are the good guys. I have played through the game to 70 several times now and I find the horde are just trying to set up a homeland and live in peace. Undead and Blood elfs all have their own agenda so its hard to see where they lie. I also find most of the alliance quests very xenophobic and filled with hatred. When you are fighting trolls in the stranglethorn and orcs in redridge these are not members of the horde under Thrall. Just as much as Dark Iron dwarves and the defias syndicate are not part of the alliance. In fact it is the combined effort of the horde and alliance which in the end banished Illidan to the outlands. I guess basically my view is that neither of these sides are evil but squabble over limited resources and History.

Hey WoW-aholic. Basically I know that the Hordes are good guys too. I just have this attachment to Alliance characters. Plus, every tiem I get a quest or turn in a quest on the Horde side, the toons are rude talking and rough. So are all the vendors. It gives me that 'bad guy' feeling. lol
I once had an Undead Warrior. They said in the description that the Undead were reluctant allies with the others. They just saw it as a means to their freedom, much as the Blood Elves do.
I really don't know anything about WoW lore. From what I see there must be some story somewhere that the game is based on. AS I have written a few times, I really don't know all that much about it all. I just like to play.

About Me |
Name: Jen
Home: Pennsylvania, United States
About Me: I started playing WoW after my best friend bugged me to play. I soon learned that I really liked it. Now 2 years later I still play and have 20 characters. LOL I am no gaming expert. I am no WoW expert. A lot of the terms and "how to do's" elude me still. But I love to play. All you will find here are the adventures of Pallanen and her sisters. I love them all and they really kick butt. So stay tuned and maybe we can learn stuff from each other that we never knew. xoxo
