Looking For Clarification |

I'm a little confused. I have been studying Tanking a lot lately. I have been doing that a lot to be a better Tank so that if/when the Guild needs me Pallanen can be ready. But I have a question.
Most every post I see about Tanking, especially on Thottbot, says that the best Tanking weapon available pre-heroic instance raiding is the Crystalblade of the Dranei. I have one. (At one point in time I had 3.) Here are the stats:
Crystalblade of the Draenei
Binds when equipped One-Hand Sword 70 - 131 Damage Speed 1.60 (62.8 damage per second) 195 Armor +18 Stamina Durability 90 / 90 Requires Level 66 Equip: Increases defense rating by +13 (5.5)
Item Level 103
But recently I managed to get this Dagger.
Ced's Carver Binds when equipped One-Hand Dagger 103 - 155 Damage Speed 1.80 (71.7 damage per second) +13 Stamina Durability 65 / 65 Requires Level 70 Equip: Improves critical strike rating by 16 (0.7%).
Equip: Increases attack power by 30.
Item Level 115
From what I've read, effective Tanking requires a weapon with a fast speed to generate more rage, which both have. It requires high DPS for drawing aggro, which both have. But the dagger has much higher stats in both areas and is pretty much the same speed. Plus additional critical strike rating and more attack power should make the dagger a better tanking weapon. I'm thinking the Dagger is a better tank weapon (until I get something better someday).
So the question is, am I wrong here? Is there some reason why a sword is considered better for tanking or am I thinking in the right direction? All the chatter I read about the Crystalblade makes it seem like I should be using it.
Personally, I absolutely love this dagger. It has a very cool black cloud glow surrounding it. I am considering buying a second one (if I can find one on the AH) just for the very cool way it looks. Imagine dual wielding something that looks like very dangerous black clouds in your hands. Plus, it appears that adding an enchant to the blade does not change that cloud effect.
Anyway, if someone stops by here who has some knowledge about the game and tanking and reads this post, please leave me a comment to let me know what the deal is. If you don't have a Blogger ID, just use the Haloscan comment box. You need no formal ID for that one. I'd appreciate any input. :) |

The sword is the better weapon. DPS helps with aggro but the most important thing is to not die as a tank. In a 10 man if the mage pulls aggro and dies it hurts the group. If you get one shotted everyone dies. You should have at least a 490 defense rating before you step into Karazan. At least that is the normal thinking. At 490 defense you will be immune to crits basically. If a boss has a special attack that deals 8k damage. What happens when it crits for 16k? Use the dagger for soloing where dps and quick hits for rage is better for you.

About Me: I started playing WoW after my best friend bugged me to play. I soon learned that I really liked it. Now 2 years later I still play and have 20 characters. LOL I am no gaming expert. I am no WoW expert. A lot of the terms and "how to do's" elude me still. But I love to play. All you will find here are the adventures of Pallanen and her sisters. I love them all and they really kick butt. So stay tuned and maybe we can learn stuff from each other that we never knew. xoxo
